"CARLEVARI" VALPOLICELLA
PRODUCER: GRUPPO COLTIVA SCARL
VENETO - ITALY
This is an all-purpose wine of ruby to purple hue, solid to plump body, grapy odour and a ripe plum flavour with a bitter finish. Usually best young -from six months to three years- some age it well beyond, notably in ripasso wines. The classico zone, known historically as Valpolicella makes most of the best wines, but the DOC zone extends east almost to Soave through the Valpantena. Valpolicella Valpantena is made from a selection of Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Molinara grapes grown in the last wave of Alpine foothills above where the Adige River swings east through Verona. This wine is similar in composition to Bardolino but sturdier and deeper. Valpolicella is fourth behind Chianti, Moscato d’Asti and Soave in DOC production. Matching: the Italian gourmets will always recommend this wine to accompany Bigoli con l’Anara, thick hand-made spaghetti with duck ragout.
