Dolcetto is a fruity, fleshy, jovial wine, not normally sweet and yet has a suggestion of sweetness about it all the same owing to the low acidity (hence Dolcetto’s misleading name).

Steady improvements in technique have enabled producers to achieve Dolcetto of unequalled appeal in the zone that produces more than half of the wine from that popular variety.

Styles vary somewhat from producer to producer, but the norm is balanced, smooth, gracefully grapy, mouth-filling wine to drink within one to three years.

It a lovely wine in early youth, without wood ageing (or not too much).

It is also a wine of everyday. It gulps down well with almost anything from antipasto through pasta to main dish and cheese, and is not so intellectual as to require careful sipping.

Calamandrana Dolcetto comes from the hills around Alba and Cuneo.

The wine is an intense ruby-red. Its delicate bouquet has caharacteristic ripe fruit notes. On the palate, it is soft and well-balanced with an attractive slightly bitter finish. It can be drunk throughout the meal; it is great with roast and grilled meats.
