"POGGIO IL CASTELLARE"
ROSSO DI MONTALCINO
PRODUCER: CANTINE BARONCINI
DOC TUSCANY

As Italy’s first alternative appellation to DOCG, this gives growers in Montalcino the option of using grapes for either Brunello or this DOC that requires one year of ageing rather than four.

In good years they may select the best grapes for Brunello, while declaring the rest as Rosso. From weak harvests they can make Rosso alone. Since it can be sold after a year at lower price, it gives producers a quicker turnover of capital and consumers a chance to taste the basic goodness of Brunello without spending a fortune.

Indeed, some Rosso is more enjoyable to drink, a red of unharnessed vigour and rich fruit flavours.
