Winemaking began in the 19th century, when two shiploads of German winemakers arrived in 1843 and 1844 with great hopes of success in Nelson. Wineries are found on the Waimea Plains, around the Upper Moutere hills and several plantings are over the Takaka Hill in Golden Bay
Alexia was started in 2000 by Jane Cooper, who has successfully worked with several Nelson vineyards over a number of years. These boutique wines are named after Jane’s grandmother and capture the very essence of the grapes and vineyards they come from. Alexia is exported to the UK through Bibendum, the USA and Singapore, and is also available in Wellington.
The fruit for this wine is drawn from a vineyard on the Waimea Plains in Nelson where the vines are now ten years old. In our experience, Riesling usually sets very consistently but this year, the set was down as with other varieties.
The stoney soils of this vineyard produce a style of Riesling that is very much in the ripe citrus (particularly limes and lemons) spectrum. Whole bunch pressing of the clean grapes has focussed the fruit characters in this wine and it finishes dry. Having worked with this vineyard over a number of years, I can say with confidence that this is a Riesling that will age well.
