“Unlike other nations, the British are not only confirmed and casual wine drinkers but extremely curious and open-minded ones. The question I am most frequently asked by groups of British wine devotees is “Where’s the next new wine region?”

I have been telling them to look out for Argentina’s finest.

This is not exactly a hot new tip. With their 1999 vintage, Argentina’s increasingly skilled winemakers have something very special to show us with the country’s characteristic deep colours and intense flavours counterbalanced in most cases by sufficient acidity.

In terms of total wine production Argentina is extremely important, fifth in the world, producing about four times as much wine as Chile. Argentina has also attracted considerable investments in the wine industry, not just from national but from across the Andes (Santa Rita of Chile) and Europeans.

LVMH established Bodegas Chandon ages ago.

Norton has been Austrian-owned for some time. Allied Domecq’s and Seagram’s respective ventures Balbi and Bianchi are no longer news.

Pernot Ricard bought Etchart and the Portuguese owners of Mateus Rose bought Finca Flichman in 1996 with a view to launching Argentine varietals in the UK and US under the Mateus name”
