Verduzzo is definitely a very ancient wine and was once widespread; it is described by Acerbi in his `Friulian vines in and around Udine`.
It is a light-skinned varietal from the Friuli region of northern Italy.
Verduzzo can be found in both, sweet and dry versions.
There are two main clones: Verduzzo and Verduzzo giallo or Verduzzo di Ramandolo, which is cultivated in the hills and produces a semi-sweet, dessert wine.
The sweet version can have a lovely mix of richness, honey, tropical fruits and almonds all wrapped in a lovely deep golden color.
On the nose: ample and fresh, zesty perfume with a bouquet that is reminiscent of apple, pear, apricot and nectarine. Best served at 8-10C
Food pairings: typical dessert wine that goes well with non-cream pastry.
When aged it is an interesting accompaniment to spicy or old cheeses.
