Select Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Molinara grapes, semi-dried on mats into the winter are used to make this rich, strong wine of ample bouquet and structure.
Its colour is deep-purple tending to garnet red.
With concentrated semi-sweet flavours that has a bitter undertone, it is rather pulpy when young but becomes smoother with age.
The grapes are coming from the last waves of Alpine foothills above where the Adige River swings East through Verona.
Sweet Recioto must be the wine world’s most serious rival to vintage Port (but quite different, with its bittersweet finish, and furthermore much better for one the morning after). It will often tends to has a certain froth.
Capable of lasting 20 years, when it shows Port-like sumptuousness, it is preferred younger by some, when its fruity buoyancy is unsuppressed.
This is, together with Amarone, the meditation wine of north-east Italy, to be taken in small doses only at the end of the meal.
