Of the four main styles of Rioja, Julian Madrid Reserva ticks all the right boxes - ripe berry fruit, a touch of oak and absolutely effortless enjoyment, thanks to its wonderful smoothness. A great all-rounder.

Housed in a beautiful 14th century building in the village of Laguardia, Primicia is run by Familia Madrid. Their 1999 Reserva was crafted with deliciously ripe fruit sourced from some of the finest vineyards around the village. Patient ageing in French oak for 14 months (in the bodega's underground cellar) adds that creamy complexity and elegance.

Dark 'chocolatey' red with fresh aromas of strawberries, red berry fruit, vanilla and subtle tobacco leaf. The spicy strawberry of Tempranillo is beautifully balanced with the weightier, round fruit of Cabernet Sauvingon.
